What the Experts Say About Compassion Fatigue

Compassion fatigue is not just burnout—it’s a trauma response. It most commonly affects caregivers, medical workers, animal rescuers, and highly empathetic people who are constantly exposed to the suffering of others.

Some key facts:

But the good news is: compassion fatigue is completely reversible—and that healing doesn’t mean caring less. It means learning how to care for yourself as much as you care for the ones you’re trying to help.

The antidote?

Grieve what you’re holding. Love yourself through it. Find your center again. And return to compassion from a place of fullness, not depletionChapter 5 Compassion_ T….

Experience 14 • Grieving the Pain of the World

This practice will help you release compassion fatigue by turning emotional overwhelm into clarity, calm, and loving energy.

You’ll need:

Step 1: Set a Sacred Intention

Write this at the top of your page:

“I am here to release compassion fatigue and open my heart again—for the Highest Good.”

You can also write:

“I am here to transform the pain of the world I carry into compassion, clarity, and courage.”

Breathe into this. Let it settle.

Step 2: Feel the Emotional Toll

Ask yourself:

Give it a name. Describe its color, shape, or texture.

For example: “Heavy gray ache in my chest from the dog rescue footage I saw yesterday.”

Step 3: Embrace the Overwhelm

Say softly:

“I see you. I hear you. I’m not going to rush you. I have space for this pain now.”

Let yourself cry. Shake. Breathe. Write whatever comes.

This is your moment to not be okay.

Step 4: Express Your Compassion Fatigue

Write from the voice of the feeling. Let it speak freely.

“I’m tired. I feel like I’ll never do enough. I can’t watch one more animal suffer. It’s too much. I hate how powerless I feel.”

Then check in: what do you need most right now?

Let your body and your heart answer.

Step 5: Love and Reconnect

Once you’ve expressed what’s present, breathe deeply again.

Place your hand over your heart.

Now, bring to mind your Rainbow One. Or Fenix. Or Ellie. Or the two dogs from Bakersfield.

Imagine holding them. Imagine sending them light.

Now say to them:

“I love you. I send you peace. I send you healing. And I send this to the whole world.”

Let yourself feel the love. Let it fill you back up.

Step 6: Let Your Compassion Lead You into Loving Action

Ask:

The goal is not to “fix” everything.

The goal is to act from love, not exhaustion.
